Vitamin B12 and pregnancy...

Newborn child, seconds after birth. The umbili...Image via WikipediaGreat article on a study done in the Netherlands involving 3,000 women. Those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 during their first three months of pregnancy had babies that cried more, low levels of B12 also interfere with the infants sleep cycle by delaying the release of melatonin. Pass me the Vitamin B12. No wonder I am craving steak, eggs, salmon and dark raw chocolate! Now don't forget to take your vitamin C with that to increase absorption! http://www.medindia.net/news/Vitamin-B-Stops-Infants-Crying-82550-1.htm

Just in case I am not getting enough in my diet I am taking Garden of Life Raw B complex.!

Receipts and BPA

A picture of a wallet.Image via WikipediaDid you know that the receipt you are being handed by the clerk is most likely coated with a powdery film that contains BPA? BPA, as most of us are now aware, is a synthetic chemical that has been shown in numerous studies to mess with our hormonal health. Now think about where you put those receipts after they are handed to you. Most likely in your wallet next to your money. So although in a lower concentration now your money has a thin film of BPA, along with your wallet lining. All this BPA is rubbing onto your skin, making it one of our highest exposures to BPA around.
My recommendations? Wash your hands after handling receipts and or money. Store those receipts in their own special place rather than with your money or in your wallet!

Study shows most plastics leak hormone like chemicals

Logo of NPR News.Image via WikipediaThought I would share this article from NPR based on  a study of plastic and leaching of hormone imitating chemicals. We are almost plastic free at our house but I haven't made the complete jump to no plastic...it is intimidating to consider all the changes we would have to make! This is one more reason pressing me towards it...click here for the article.

Why we eat Organic Grass Fed Beef

Hereford SteerImage via Wikipedia

Every year in March I am making a point of putting in my order for grass fed organic beef. Why you might ask? Is it cheaper? Cheaper than what conventional beef, organic store bought? If it's not cheaper why bother ordering it? These are all questions I have been asked and will attempt to answer in this post!
From a few studies I have read it has been found that grass fed beef is more nutritious than it's conventional counterpart. It has 10 times more beta carotene, 3 times more vitamin E and 3 times more Omega 3 fatty acids along with more Omega 6.(Granted carrots and Salmon still have more than a piece of beef.) Grass fed beef is also 3 times leaner than corn based meat, making it easier on your waistline. The "marbled" beef that many people attain to is a result of a grain fed diet.
Since cows were created to eat grass they do better when fed grass and only grass. A 100% grass fed cow does not have the high E-coli count in it's gut as a "classic" American feed lot cow. Don't let the term "grain finished" fool you. Most cows start out with the first 6-12 months of their lives eating grass. But then they are sent to feed lots where they are fed a grain based diet to fatten them up. What's the big deal with a grain fed cow you might ask? Grain is not a natural diet for cud-chewers. Feeding a cow grain causes digestive problems and generally makes them more sickly resulting in their need for antibiotics. Almost all grain fed cows need antibiotics.
According to one source Mad cow disease has never been found in grass finished
beef.  "Feedlot cattle may eat all kinds of products in addition to grain, including chicken manure, chicken feathers, newsprint, cardboard and municipal garbage waste" along with old candy bars and many other things!"
Grass fed beef is more humane. Anyone who has seen Food Inc will not argue with the idea that a cow is happier when it lives out it's life in a pasture with lots of roaming room than when crammed together in a traditional feed lot.I believe a grass fed cow is a happy cow and I have fewer moral issues eating a well cared for animal.

Article in the New York Times on a GMO corn

Via No GMO's website "The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a new type of corn that was genetically engineered to make ethanol conversion easier. The food industry fears

that if this new corn, called Enogen, cross-pollinated with corn used for food, it could have a

 significant impact on food quality."

Kangaroo care for babies. Good article.

I am a doctor Mercola fan. This is a great reminder that skin to skin contact with our babies is so important. I had my little one at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. They were fabulous about this! Click Here to see the link.

BPA. It's more places than I thought!

BPA: What is it? Why should I even think about it? I started thinking about all these toxic nasty chemicals when I got pregnant and even more so when my thyroid decided to not work properly. BPA is a chemical that is a hormone disruptor, commonly used in plastics and epoxies. It lurks in our daily lives in SO many places.  It is one of the most commonly produced chemicals in the world. Studies have proven over and over that there is no "safe" level. All levels of exposure to BPA in our lives produces hormone disruption of some kind in our or our children's bodies. In Canada it has been labeled TOXIC by the government. In the USA it is estimated to be in 70 percent of our plastics. Polycarbonate plastics to be specific often labeled with the number 7.
 It is used to make:
Cd's, DVD,s, water bottles, drinking plastic glasses, kitchen appliances (like coffee pots), plastic utensils, plastic eyeglass lenses, water jugs used in office water coolers, hockey helmet visors, medical supplies, apple laptops, blackberry's, the lining of food cans, soda bottles, grocery store reciepts (Whole foods has one of the highest levels in their reciepts), newspaper print, recycled paper, epoxies, dental filling materials, surface waters, protective coating around wire piping, toys, used extensively in cars and trucks for things like headlights...
The good news about BPA is that it is metabolized quickly in the body, the bad news is we are marinating in it, so it is practically impossible to rid oneself of exposure but we can LIMIT exposure. Our highest direct exposure is through our food.
So if it surrounds me...why should I even try to limit my exposure? Here is why...the health problems it has been proven to cause( due to it's hormone mimicking). The short list of health issues caused by BPA exposure is damage in utero to future females eggs (damaging more than one generation at a time, three generations to be exact). "BPA also increases the susceptibility to prostate cancer, it reprogrammes the prostate gland and affects how it functions throughout life." There is a direct link between BPA and breast cancer, prostate cancer, increased obesity, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease. In babies it causes uro-genital abnormalities (male babies specifically), decline in semen quality in men, early onset of puberty in girls, metabolic disorders, and neurobehavioural problems.
According to lead researchers " It is not possible to envision any way of protecting people when such low active doses have such dramatic effects." There is NO safe dose. Pregnancy and early life are especially sensitive periods given infants body mass ratio to the high exposure rate. ( until recently it was in most baby bottles and unless marked otherwise it is what lines the cans of baby formula containers)
Your first question if you are like me might be "So what's the point if it's everywhere?"  Well for me my little girl and future generation is the point. I have to at least try. I won't purposefully expose her to what I know to be toxic. Here is what I do to avoid BPA in my life as much as I can.

  • I no longer buy highly acidic canned foods like tomatoes. The acidity eats away at the coating of the can. If you must buy pre diced tomatoes buy them jarred or can them yourself.
  • opt for foods canned in glass or BPA free cans like Eden foods.
  • Pick paper over plastic at the grocery store
  • Touch your grocery reciepts with your bare hands as little as possible
  • Avoid putting plastic in the microwave.
  • Do not put cling wrap in direct contact with food
  • Do not use disposable water bottles
  • When using plastic use the mantra 4,5,1 and 2 the rest are bad for you

A Teflon Free House...it's harder than you think!

So I made the mistake of ordering and reading a book called "Slow Death by Rubber Duck: The Secret Danger of Everyday Things." Don't get me wrong it's a good book, well written. I just can't say I am enjoying reading it. Before I read it I was more naive about the things that surround us and sometimes ignorance is bliss. It's one of those books that makes you realize that no matter how hard you try to limit one's exposure to toxic, bad substances it still manages to be in our lives.
For example I thought "if I get rid of all my Teflon cooking pans I will have banished it from my life." Not so. Sure I have decreased my daily exposure but it can still be found in my house in anything "stain resistant", in my raincoat, in Olivia's raincoat (it is found in water resistant fabric such as gore-tex, scotchgard and stainmaster), carpets that are stain resistant contain it, pizza box lining, toaster ovens, irons, space heaters, carpet glues, stain resistant coating on sofas, self-cleaning ovens with non stick coating (which I have),windshield wipers, computer mice, if you live in West Virginia chances are it is in your drinking water (DuPont is located in West Virginia), and it is  a key ingredient in cosmetics and clothing.( And this is only one substance addressed in the book)

Let me share with you a little of what I have learned about Teflon or PFC's.
DuPont invented Teflon. Their "Tag line" for Teflon is "It's Everywhere". Well in my opinion and the opinion of the book. It's not supposed to be everywhere! If our blood was to be drawn and a test for the presence of PFC's 98 percent of us would test positive for them. The problem with Teflon is that it is a chemical that lasts almost forever. What is the big deal about PFC's? I mean why should I even care? Teflon has been linked to respiratory ailments (when pans are cooked on high in the kitchen pet birds have been known to drop dead), various cancers, birth defects, and a contributing factor to asthma and autism.
All this information is overwhelming. But knowledge is power. I may not be able to get rid of everything bad. But I can take one small step at a time. At least I got rid of all my non-stick pans. Although...they are now in a landfill leaching into someones water supply.
The reason I care:
