I have been looking for a replacement for my scouring pads. I recently (two months ago) came across stainless steel scrubbers.
They are fantastic! They don't rust like steel wool pads and after two months I am still using the first one out of the package! I use mine in the kitchen for cleaning tough pots and pans, I also scrub my cook top with it and it does not scratch it. ( I recommend a test spot on your surface of choice prior to using.) I put the second one in the package in my cleaning bucket. I use it on my tub and shower for those water rings that accumulate so quickly. It works wonders! I clean my kitchen one in the dishwasher when it needs disinfecting and my cleaning bucket one in the washer machine. You can also clean by hand if food gets stuck in the little rings. It rinses out quickly. This has been a great solution for me instead of going through all the steel wool pads that always left little rust stains on my sink ledge when left there to dry.! If anyone knows where to buy them local let me know. For now I found them on amazon.com
for $2.99 plus shipping. I am excited to see how long one can last me. So far two months and counting!

Budget Organic Potato and Corn Soup
Today I realized I have 10 more days before Jason's next paycheck, so wanting to stretch the food I have I started thinking about my potatoes and frozen corn. Knowing Jason had had plenty of protein today (his love) I decided on a vegetarian dinner. I had originally planned a different soup. This one was easier for me with a crabby baby and a shorter day at home.
Organic Potato and Corn soup
Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons of coconut oil (nutiva extra virgin from amazon.com
)
8 garlic cloves peeled and crushed (I buy pre peeled from Costco and freeze it)
4 cups Organic frozen or fresh corn ( I buy large frozen bags from Costco)
6 medium organic potatoes cubed to about 1-2 inches (these were 1.00 per pound at the farmers market)
4 cups of water
2 tsp of cumin
1 tsp of crushed red pepper
(cayenne)
salt to taste
Directions:
Saute onions, garlic, cumin, crushed red pepper in coconut oil until onions are transparent

Add potatoes, corn, water. Cover and boil until potatoes are tender.

Take about half the soup and puree in blender. Add back to the unpureed soup in pot.

Mix. Add salt to taste. Simmer for five more minutes and then serve.
This can also be eaten cold. The spicier it is (say 2 tsp of crushed red pepper) the better it tastes cold because the spice adds a heat of it's own.
I was pleasantly surprised at how yummy this was. Feel free to substitute chicken broth for the water.

Organic Coffee
I recently discovered that coffee is second only to cotton in pesticide load. Put another way it is the second most sprayed crop in the world. Now I don't know about you but I have a hard time affording organic clothing (although I have recently found some at Walmart of all places!) but I can afford organic coffee. I buy a huge bag of it from Costco once per month.

Per WebMd Coffee has many health benefits among them are
- Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes (oddly enough, the more the better for this – so they say), colon cancer, Parkinson’s disease, cavities, and gallstones
- It can also increase your mood and help with headaches.
- “Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies.
- I’m sure Dr. Nicole could list some more for us, and she even gives us this great latte recipe:Perfect Dairy Free Latte, so there must be something good about coffee
You are more likely to enjoy these benefits drinking organic coffee.
The most common chemical used in coffee production is synthetic petroleum based fertilizers which slowly destroy the soil's fertility and seep into local water supplies.
So join me in making a small difference in our bodies and our world one cup of coffee at a time! Drink Organic Coffee
